March 2nd is a statewide day of action organized by Kids Count on Us. On Monday, March 2, childcare programs will close, and communities will come together to highlight a system in crisis — and to demand solutions that support caregivers and families alike.

This zoom meeting is designed to bring families and community members up to speed on the growing threats to Minnesota’s childcare system and to explore what we can do together to protect it. We will explain what the federal childcare freeze means for Minnesota and break down the real impact on families, including already high childcare costs and how this crisis will make care even less affordable. Participants will learn about the challenges facing childcare educators, who are essential to our economy but are not earning livable wages, leading to staffing shortages and program closures. The discussion will also cover how these combined pressures affect families, providers, educators, and communities across the state.

Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions, gain clarity, and leave feeling informed, empowered, and ready to take action.

The Family Affordability Summit centers on the growing financial challenges facing Minnesota families, with a strong emphasis on the rising cost of child care.

The summit brings together policymakers, community leaders, advocates, and families to examine how child care expenses—alongside housing, health care, education, and everyday living costs—impact family budgets and workforce participation. Discussions focus on practical solutions to make child care more accessible and affordable, support working parents, and strengthen early childhood systems.

Through collaboration and policy-focused dialogue, the summit aims to advance strategies that improve family financial stability and ensure Minnesota remains an affordable, family-friendly state.

While your children enjoy open play at the KUBE, you’ll have the chance to meet other parents, caregivers, and community members who are coming together to strengthen Minnesota’s child care system.

We’ll share how parents are organizing through simple, opt-in actions that fit real life—no experience required. You’ll learn how to get involved in ways that match your capacity, connect with others who care about these issues, and help build collective parent power.
